buffering.c Buffering should truncate if read() returns 0 since it's not a valid return there as there should be data left to read. The loop wouldn't break until there was a message in the queue. It will search for a valid MPEG frame header sequence, decode it, and probe if there is a consecutive MPEG frame header of the same type (MPEG version, layer, sampling frequency) at the expected position.
